Coronado Lacrosse Teams Join Forces to Champion Mental Health Awareness
In a show of unity and purpose, Coronado High School’s boys and girls lacrosse programs joined forces with Safe Harbor Coronado, Morgan’s Message, the Islander Sports Foundation, and their respective boosters to shine a spotlight on mental health. Through four dedicated games—April 17th for the girls versus Scripps Ranch High School (JV and Varsity), and April 23rd for the boys versus Patrick Henry High School (JV and Varsity) —the Islander community came together to champion the message that mental health matters just as much as physical health.
The initiative was led by Safe Harbor Coronado, a local nonprofit dedicated to promoting emotional well-being. With support from Morgan’s Message—a national nonprofit focused on destigmatizing mental health among student-athletes—the events served as a rallying cry for compassion, awareness, and action.
Safe Harbor Coronado Executive Director Danielle Maske, who helped coordinate the events, emphasized that the goal was to remind students they are more than their athletic performance. The initiative aimed to reinforce that a student-athlete’s value isn’t defined by the stat sheet, and that it’s not only okay—but encouraged—to ask for help, support one another, and prioritize mental wellness. The broader message of the evenings was clear: Coronado is committed to building people, not just athletes.
Each dedication night included a special pregame presentation to both teams, with the Islanders presenting bracelets to their opponents demonstrating the importance of the individual. Prior to the games, the coaches and student-athletes received a presentation from Safe Harbor Coronado to hear about the rising concerns surrounding youth mental health. Student-athletes wore signature Morgan’s Message t-shirts: "Taking a Shot at Mental Health" and Human> Athlete.
The effort also emphasized Safe Harbor’s ongoing commitment to normalizing mental health conversations and encouraging help-seeking behavior. With mental health struggles increasing across the country, especially among teens, the partnership between athletics and advocacy could not be more timely or necessary.
